Crane Institute of America Announces 10th Edition of Mobile Cranes Handbook

April 23, 2014- Crane Institute of America recently announced the availability of the 10th edition of its Mobile Cranes handbook by James Headley, president of organization. The handbook is utilized as a study guide for mobile crane operators preparing to take accredited certification exams.

For the first time, the handbook includes service/mechanics trucks. This equipment can be found anywhere heavy equipment or machinery is used, such as mines, gas and oil fields, utility sub-stations, or local crane rental companies. The addition of service/mechanic truck cranes is important with OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 requiring the qualification, or certification, of operators if the equipment is used in activities other than maintenance and repair.

An important section on mobile cranes is the chapter on load charts. "It is not enough to know how to use load charts, but to know why load charts must be followed for safe operation," said Headley.

Topics covered in the handbook:

  • Cranes Types & Components
  • Load Charts
  • Conditions that Reduce Capacity
  • Pre-Operational Inspection
  • Crane Setup
  • Working Near Power Lines
  • Operating Practices & Procedures
  • Hoisting Personnel
