Crane Topples San Diego

January 2016 - A crew member suffered an open fracture when he was pinned between K-rails as a crane tipped over, blocking freeway lanes for about five hours. A crane operator was loading concrete K-rail barriers onto a flatbed trailer when the weight of the load on the crane’s extended boom tipped the crane onto its side. San Diego Fire-Rescue reported the boom crushed the center of the trailer and caused K-rails to fall onto the freeway.

The crew member, standing on the flatbed to guide the lifting process, became pinned between K-rails when the boom tipped over. Other workers used crow bars to pry the barrier off him before he was taken to a local hospital. The crane boom lay across the trailer and freeway lanes for the next several hours while contractors worked to load the spilled barriers onto another trailer and right the crane. - www.sandiegouniontribune.com
