Dropped Load Des Plaines, Ill.

April 2016 – One construction worker was killed and three others injured when a 45-ton, 187-ft. steel bridge beam, being held by two cranes during nighttime work on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway Bridge, fell on them. The four workers were in aerial lifts under the bridge when the bridge support beam fell and struck them. Three suffered minor injuries; the fourth was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The massive beam remained in the roadway, blocking a street, while crews worked to figure out whether they could lift the beam or would need to cut it up in order to remove it. OSHA is investigating the fatal accident. – www.upi.com
