Crane Company Fined in Workplace Injury

September 23, 2016 - A 2012 workplace accident that left a worker paralyzed has resulted in a CA$120,000 fine for a Canadian crane company previously convicted of an Occupational Health and Safety Act violation for failing to provide instructions and supervision to protect a worker.

According to news reports, the Ministry of Labour found that the veteran crane operator was seriously injured when a boom-truck crane part fell and struck him as he was raising the crane’s boom. The Edmonton, Canada-based crane company was convicted of failing to provide instruction and/or supervision in accordance with the crane manufacturer’s operating manual.

Mandatory surcharges drove the OHS violation penalty to more than CA$150,000.
