SC&RA Posthumously Honors George Young

May 7, 2018 - The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) honored the late George S. Young with the organization’s Golden Achievement Award during ceremonies at its Annual Conference, April 17-21, in Boca Raton, Fla.

Until his sudden death on March 6, 2018, Mr. Young had been senior advisor at George Young Mammoet, Swedesboro, N.J., and had also been a long-time active member of SC&RA. He is the 13th recipient of the SC&RA’s Golden Achievement Award.

The prestigious award, last presented in 2014, goes to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to specialized transportation or to the crane-and-rigging industry during a consistent and significant period of time.

“George Young was a consummate professional who was dedicated to his family, the industry, and SC&RA,” said Joel Dandrea, SC&RA’s chief executive officer. “He made countless contributions to the association and the award was well deserved. He will be greatly missed.”

Young died suddenly on March 6th, 2018, while on vacation with his wife, Karin.

He and his company have been a member of SC&RA since 1964, and his experience with the association is extensive.

Young served on the Crane & Rigging Group, the Allied Industries Group, the Crane & Rigging Tower Crane Committee, the Editorial Advisory Committee, and the Magazine Task Force.

He also served on many SC&R Foundation committees and was elected to both the SC&RA and SC&R Foundation board of directors, where he served as treasurer. Young was elected to the SC&RA Executive Committee and ultimately reached the highest volunteer position at SC&RA, serving as chairman of the board of directors from 2004-2005. By way of his chairmanship, Young served on the association’s nominating committee and strategic planning committee. At the time of his passing, he was on the board of directors as a past chair, on the past chairman’s council, and was current chair of the association’s insurance and risk management committee.

Young was known as a man who followed in his father’s footsteps and exhibited a passion for moving works of fine art. He orchestrated many important moves over the course of his career, which included moving the Liberty Bell three times, and moving Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE Statue, the Rocky Sculpture, and many other priceless treasures.

The Golden Achievement Award was presented to Young’s wife, Karin, by James A. Vitez, of KMX International, a one of Young’s longtime friends. “You have a friend in Pennsylvania is something we say often in the Keystone state,” he said. “Well, we all had a friend in George Young, one who was deeply and genuinely committed to the industry.”

In 2017, Mr. Young and his family sold The George Young Company to Mammoet, one of the largest rigging and heavy haul companies in the world.
