Grove’s New TMS500-2 Truck Crane is Built for Taxi Work

July 31, 2018 - Manitowoc’s new Grove TMS500-2 is a 40-U.S.-ton capacity truck crane that features the quick set up and versatile taxi capability customers told Manitowoc they wanted in a rig of this type and size.

Its mobility and versatility make it perfect for housing construction, steel erection, HVAC installation, and dozens of other applications.

Manitowoc unveiled a prototype at its Crane Days event in June.

“We saw a strong demand from our dealers and the market in general for a lightweight, versatile truck crane with excellent taxi capabilities,” said J.J. Grace, product manager for truck-mounted cranes at Manitowoc. “We took that sentiment into account, and the TMS500-2 is the result.”

 

The TMS500-2 will have two boom options. The first telescopes from 29’ to 95’, and features three quick-reeve Nylatron sheaves in the boom top. The second extends from 32’ to 102’ and has four quick-reeve Nylatron sheaves. Both are four-section, full-power, synchronized booms that extend and retract quickly. An optional 26’ to 45’ telescoping swingaway lattice jib quickly adds extra reach when it’s needed, and can be offset at 0°. 15°, or 30°. Maximum jib-tip height is 153.2’.

 

The TMS500-2 uses the same carrier cab as the 90-ton-capacity TMS9000-2, debuted at ConExpo-Con/Agg in 2017. This modern, single-person cab comes with an upgraded console, automotive-style gauges, multi-function steering, and fingertip operation of cruise control and driving lights.

 

The full-vision superstructure cab offers maximum visibility and features improved climate control and Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS), which includes a working range limiter, operator-programmable function speeds, and selectable ECO mode that reduces fuel consumption.

 

The high-performance 350 hp Cummins ISL engine and Ultrashift transmission can zip the TMS500-2 along a highway at up to 70 mph. The crane can be equipped with either a lighter or heavier counterweight for versatility in meeting lifting requirements and local roading regulations. The exact amounts are still being tested and verified. With either amount of counterweight, the TMS500-2 provides best-in-class performance, says Manitowoc. The crane can travel as a self-contained unit, complete with counterweight, outriggers, hoist rope, to minimize cost and maximize the number of jobs it can do in a day.

 

The four outriggers can be set for 100%, 50%, or 0% extension. The smart length-sensing extension cylinders are more accurate and easier to service than a string-pot system. For fast setup, the outriggers feature automatic leveling and can be operated either from chassis-mounted controls or a wireless remote. The crane also comes with a front stabilizer jack.
