Liebherr’s New Five-Axle LTM 1150-5.3 AT Crane Lifts 165 USt, has 216’ Boom

Oct. 20, 2020 – Liebherr has rolled out its LTM 1150-5.3, a new five-axle all-terrain crane designed to be the successor to its highly successful LTM 1130-5.1, of which some 1,500 have been sold.

Christoph Kleiner, Liebherr sales director calls the new LTM 1150-5.3 “The jewel in your fleet, a flexible all-rounder that will enhance any crane fleet.”

Kleiner says that the LTM 1150-5.3’s 216’ (66 m) boom is the longest in its class and that the 165-USt (150-tonne) crane can compete with models in the 220-USt (200-tonne) lifting capacity class.

“It delivers outstanding lifting capacities when fully raised and at large radii,” said Kleiner. “And it is immediately ready for use once it reaches the site because it carries  9.9 tons (9 tonnes) of  ballast and has a gross weight of 66 tons (60 tonnes). That means it can complete lots of jobs without requiring additional transport vehicles.”

Long, powerful telescopic boom

Compared to its predecessor, the telescopic boom on the new LTM 1150-5.3 is 20’ (6 m) longer. At the same length of 196’ (60 m), the new 5-axle crane can hoist 13.2 tons (12 tonnes) when fully raised. That’s 1.65 tons (1.5 tonnes) more than its predecessor. When fully extended to 216’ (66 m), the new crane can lift more than 9.9 tons (9 tonnes). That makes it perfect for erecting tower cranes and radio masts.

Lattice extensions enable the new 165-ton crane to achieve hook heights of up to 301’ and radii to 236’. For this, one 23’ lattice boom extension and a 35’- 62’ double folding jib are used. The latter can be adjusted hydraulically between 0° and 40°. A 9’6” erection jib and a runner, which can be swung to the side, round off the equipment list. Particularly economical – the lattice jibs are compatible for many crane models in the 110- to 198-ton class within the Liebherr portfolio.

Economical drive technology with ECOdrive and ECOmode

The time-tested six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine in the undercarriage provides the drive power. It develops 554-hp (400 kW) and a torque of 1,855 ft.-lb. (2516 Nm). The engine satisfies the new stage V emissions directive and can also be configured to comply with the regulations which apply in countries outside of Europe, for example Tier 4 Final for the U.S. or stage IIIA for lower-regulated countries.

The ZF-TraXon gearbox transfers power to the crane's axles. ECOdrive is particularly economical and convenient. The additional eco mode delivers enhanced drive properties that save fuel and reduce both noise and CO2 emissions. In addition, Hill-start Aid makes starting on grades easier.

Liebherr has continued its single-engine strategy in this crane, with a mechanical drive to the superstructure. The weight reduction from not having a superstructure engine (as the previous model did) is used to deliver a longer boom and more lifting capacity.

In keeping with the latest developments from the Liebherr mobile crane series, the new 165-ton crane also features ECOmode for crane operations to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of both noise and CO2. First, the complete pump drive can be disconnected automatically when the engine is idling and then reconnected by the intelligent controller in a matter of seconds when it is required. And secondly, the crane controller automatically calculates the perfect engine speed for the working speed selected using the control lever to avoid unnecessarily high engine speeds.

Adjustable Hook Blocks

Hook blocks have to be heavy to ensure that the hoisting winch spools reliably. However, they should be as light as possible for being transported on the crane and for high net loads during lifting.

Liebherr has designed a completely new range of hook blocks to satisfy these requirements – weight plates are attached to both sides of the hook block to change the weight of the block so that it is perfect for the current situation. Kleiner explained: “Our engineers have produced a simple, but brilliant design as it means that operators can react even more flexibly to every job.”

For example, a 3-sheave hook block, which previously has weighed 1,543 lbs. in this crane class, now only weighs 1,102 lbs., but can be upgraded to 1,543 lbs. quickly and easily when necessary. The new system is available for 1- to 7-sheave hook blocks. These can be used on cranes with both 19 mm and 21 mm ropes. The weights can be interchanged to ensure simple handling.

Increased hoist height and radius, 10% longer telescopic boom, 165-USt capacity, an average of 15% higher capacity, the same weight as its predecessor, and a per-axle loading of 26,400 lbs. — all make Liebherr’s new LTM 1150-5.3 a highly competitive contender in the five-axle AT arena.
