Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 Installs Gas Flue at Power Plant

July 3, 2013 - A new gas flue was recently installed in the large power plant in Mannheim, Germany. Two building edges, a lifting height of 102 metres, a large lifting radius, and constricted working space meant that a Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 was ideal for the job. The contractor Hellmich-Kranservice used the new Liebherr crane owned by Wiesbauer GmbH from Bietigheim for this job on the banks of the Rhine.
The stainless steel flue measures around 50 metres in length and had to be lifted into the building in sections through an opening in the roof and then assembled inside. A total of four elements were supplied. The longest pipe was 14 meters long and weighed around 6 tonnes. Crane operator Karsten Kelm was in charge of the "blind flight" and managed to control the whole thing following the instructions provided by the fitters inside the power plant.
As a result of the large radius and the height of the building, the LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane was identified as the perfect tool for the job. With the full setup, completely extended with a 19-meter telescopic boom extension and the 91 meter luffing lattice jib, the nine-axle crane from Liebherr provided everything required for this particular job.
The features of the LTM 1750-9.1 include short setup times because the four-piece telescopic boom is carried on the vehicle at all times. A remote control ensures that the crane operator can view what is going on throughout the setup process.
The operator can control the crane and also operate functions such as bolting the folding beams. A fast setup is also enabled by the construction of the fastening points of the components being fitted because the fastening equipment does not have to be changed at any time throughout the setup procedure.
These features are designed to enhance safety and speed and were used for erection and dismantling the crane at the Mannheim power plant. Although the Wiesbauer team were erecting the mobile crane for the first time in its maximum configuration and therefore to its full height, it only took them around a day and a half. And they managed this, despite the very constricted space available on the site.
