55-Ton Talbert Low-Deck Trailer Makes for a Versatile Hauler
March 25, 2014 - The 55SA-LD, a 55-ton spread-axle, low-deck trailer from Talbert Manufacturing, features an 18-in. deck height and an E1Nitro so it can run with three axles, four axles close-coupled, or as a 3+1 spread-axle. The versatile trailer is a solution for haulers who need the flexibility of a low deck height and the flexibility to run a variety of configurations.

The 55SA-LD's 18-in. deck height, two inches lower than Talbert’s standard 55SA unit. The extra two inches are for hauling heavy and oversized equipment under bridges or through tunnels with low clearance. In addition, the lower deck height equates to additional load opportunities.
The standard Talbert 55SA-LD features a non-ground bearing hydraulic gooseneck design with a 108-inch swing radius. The trailer’s 24-in. flip gooseneck extension results in a 132-in. swing radius that allows haulers to transfer additional load from the drive axles to the steer axle of their tractors.
With the E1Nitro, companies can expand their service regions into states that require the fourth axle to be at least 14'1" from the third axle. The system articulates left and right and uses nitrogen to equalize the up and down movement to provide proportionate weight distribution in each axle grouping. Through a combination of hydraulic and nitrogen equalization , the E1Nitro absorbs hauling and loading shocks, and provides a greater range of suspension movement for reduced stress and a smoother ride. The system also acts as a hydraulic shim point between the trailer and the spreader. It also incorporates two-speed dual landing gear for greater stability when the E-Nitro is disconnected from the trailer.
The four-beam trailer is constructed with 12-in., T-1 main beams and two inches of apitong decking. It also features 12-in. swinging, removable outriggers for wider loads and a 25'6" cleared deck length (26 feet actual).
Talbert’s 55SA-LD trailer provides haulers a range of hauling capacities and capabilities. It has capacities of 55 tons in 10 ft. with four axles close-coupled, 55 tons in half the deck length in a three-axle or 3+1 spread-axle configuration, and 60 tons in half the deck length with four axles close-coupled.
