Additional Liebherr Tower Crane Supports Crazy Horse Memorial
New Liebherr tower crane added to Crazy Horse Memorial project to support ongoing construction and lifting operations.
A new Liebherr 1000 EC-H tower crane has been added to the Crazy Horse Memorial project, supporting ongoing construction efforts on one of the world’s largest sculptural undertakings. The crane was selected at CONEXPO 2026 and will be delivered by Morrow Equipment Company as part of a long-standing collaboration tied to the site.
Located in South Dakota, the project involves carving a 172-meter-high and 195-meter-wide representation of Lakota leader Crazy Horse into Thunderhead Mountain. The addition of a second 1000 EC-H tower crane expands lifting capacity and supports ongoing work on the upper sections of the monument, where precision and stability are critical.
The site team has previously used a Liebherr tower crane to move heavy granite blocks, tools and prefabricated components throughout various stages of construction. The new unit is expected to further support lifting operations in the challenging mountain environment, where high altitude and wind conditions require consistent performance.
The Liebherr 1000 EC-H offers a lifting capacity of up to 50 tons and a maximum working radius of 80 meters. Its high-top design and slewing gear are intended to support stable operation, while the modular tower system allows configuration adjustments as the project evolves.
A spokesperson for the site team noted, “The Liebherr 1000 EC H provides the performance and dependability we need for such a unique environment. Its stability and precision are essential to our daily operations on the mountain.”
The addition of the crane continues a decades-long relationship between the project team, Liebherr and Morrow, supporting ongoing construction progress at the site.
