AEMP Awards Fleet Technicians for Service

February 25, 2008 • The Association of Equipment Management Professionals Foundation, Glenwood Springs, Colo., has announced its two Technician of the Year award recipients for 2008. The foundation named one winner from the public sector and one from private industry.

Craig Donor of Virginia Department of Transportation, was named the public fleet technician award winner. A 19-year industry veteran, Donor works at a VDOT facility in Fredericksburg, Va., and was named 2008 Technician of the Year for his nine-shop district. He was part of a committee that developed and introduced laptop diagnostic equipment to VDOT repair shops statewide, and was part of the pilot FleetCross website, for which he is now an instructor and administrator. He was on a committee to design a new piece of equipment that is now undergoing field testing as a prototype, and thought of a modification to field service trucks that frees the bed of the truck for supplies and spare parts, a change being implemented statewide. He was selected to a District Mentor Program, holds ASE Masters and FAA certifications, and is also a certified welder and FEMA-certified emergency manager.

Brian Ganson of George J. Igel & Company, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, was named the private fleet technician winner. In his 14 years in the profession, Ganson has become a highly respected member of a team of 20, even as the youngest of his company's field mechanics. He is on the firm's safety committee, and coordinated the purchase and installation of a GPS fleet monitoring system, suggesting system modifications to the vendor that were incorporated and will be introduced at ConExpo next month.

The AEMP Technician of the Year Award, established in 1989, is sponsored annually by the AEMP Foundation to spotlight the increasingly complex skill sets required of today's professional technician, and to raise awareness of the critical shortage of technicians. Award winners are selected based on professionalism, technical skills, innovative troubleshooting and diagnostics, and for exemplary contributions to the equipment technician profession.

The AEMP Foundation will present Technician of the Year awards at a breakfast to be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. March 10, during its 26th Annual Management Conference & Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.

The AEMP Foundation hosts the event to fund technician scholarships for the children of AEMP members and their employees attending accredited two-year technical education programs in pursuit of careers as equipment technicians. Scholarship funds cover tuition and books for recipients.

The AEMP Technician of the Award is sponsored by John Deere and the AEMP Foundation. The awards luncheon is sponsored by Qualcomm.

AEMP will present several other awards at its conference in Las Vegas, including the Fleet Master Awards, Member of the Year, Associate of the Year and The Richard Hawkins Award.
