Alaska Crane Opens Arctic Circle Location

November 3, 2015 - In late October, Alaska Crane opened its North Slope operation, which is located in the region that contains the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The company works throughout the state with its fleet of lattice-boom crawler cranes and mobile cranes, many of which are rated for work in -70° F temperatures. For its latest venture, Alaska Crane has slated its new Liebherr LTM1220-5.2 all-terrain crane for oil and gas work in the area.

While the LTM1220 will kick off the initial work, the company reports another new AT crane will be making its way to the North Slope operation. In 2016, the company will take delivery of a 595-ton, eight-axle Liebherr LTM1500-8.1—the largest AT in the state.

According to David Myers, director of business development for STG Inc., parent of Alaska Crane, a comparable-sized crawler crane would take more than 20 trucks to transport, and there would be considerable mobile logistics and planning to move that crane to the work site. “With our fleet of ATs, we drive down the road with a few fall-off loads of counterweights; thereby streamlining the transport and setup process,” he said. “In these economic times, we are thrilled to offer our clients innovative, cost-saving solutions.”

In 2013, STG Inc. was purchased by Calista Regional Native Corp., which also owns Brice Equipment. Brice supplies arctic-grade construction support equipment to the oil and gas and construction industries. Myers said the North Slope operation will allow Alaska Crane and Brice Equipment to share resources, such as yards, mechanics, and shops, which made it feasible for the crane company to have a presence above the Arctic Circle.
