California Advances Plan for 24/7 Auto-Issue OS/OW Permits

California seeks funding for a 24/7 auto-issue OS/OW permit system, with support and updates provided by SC&RA.

California may soon move closer to offering around-the-clock automated oversize/overweight (OS/OW) permit issuance, following a recent update from the California Transportation Permits Advisory Council (CTPAC). According to information shared by the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA), the California Highway Patrol has applied for a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Intelligent Technology Deployment (ITD) grant that would fully fund the system.

The ITD grant request marks a significant step for one of SC&RA’s top advocacy states, as California remains among the few that do not currently provide 24/7 auto-issued OS/OW permits. The association noted its strong support for the program and urged federal officials to move quickly.

SC&RA also encouraged Congress to increase future funding, stating that expanded ITD resources in the next federal transportation bill would support broader nationwide adoption of permit automation.

CTPAC — a joint committee composed of CalTrans, the California Highway Patrol and the California Trucking Association — is one of the state’s key forums for industry and government collaboration on OS/OW issues.

The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. PST at the Hotel del Coronado, following SC&RA’s January Board and Committee Meetings. The session is open to attendees at no cost. Members planning to participate in the SC&RA meetings and CTPAC discussions are encouraged to plan travel accordingly.

For additional information, SC&RA directs inquiries to Chris Smith, SC&RA vice president of transportation.
