Cincinnati Tightens Crane Safety Rules

March 31, 2016 - The City of Cincinnati is following suit behind New York City, and working to tighten crane operation rules. After a recent local crane accident, and a fatal crawler-crane collapse in New York City, Cincinnati’s city council is considering more restrictive rules for the approximately 200 cranes at work in the city.

The city council is expected to approve the rules, which would go into effect July 1st. The rules include operator certification; equipment registration; phasing out of cranes more than 20 years old; and higher minimum insurance levels.

In announcing the new rules, Mayor John Cranley recognized Maxim Crane Works and President Frank Bardonaro who was heavily involved in the legislation. "These new standards are critical to ensure the safety of the public as well as the contractors and employees," said Bardonaro. "This new legislation will ensure that all crane-related operations in the City are held to a new and higher standard. The City did an outstanding job of working with the stakeholders on this initiative and we look forward to this new proposal becoming law," he added.
