Construct My Future Program Names Scholarship Winners

September 16, 2008 • Helping teens embark on a construction industry career is the aim of the ConstructMyFuture.com program, which has named the latest winners of its annual scholarships. The program is a cooperative effort of the Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation (AEDF), Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

Teens from Minnesota, Pennsylvania and South Carolina have each earned $1,000 scholarships to be used for construction-focused education. The winners are Andrew Retzlaff of Mankato, Minn., to attend South Central (MN) College for heavy construction equipment technician, focused on diesel mechanics and hydraulics; William Gumbert of Allenport, Pa., to attend Penn College of Technology for technology management and heavy equipment technician/operator; and John Lynch of Fort Mill, S.C., to attend Clemson (SC) University for construction management.

ConstructMyFuture.com scholarships are available to students and construction industry professionals, with the funds to be used for higher-education tuition or the purchase of tools to improve worker productivity.  Scholarship applications are evaluated based on applicants' essays, school transcripts and personal references. In 2009, because of donations from Kobleco Cranes, ConstructMyFuture.com will be offering 10 scholarships ($1,000 each).

The ConstructMyFuture.com website offers an interactive forum for students, teachers, counselors and parents to explore the many opportunities available in the construction industry, with a focus on contracting, distribution and equipment manufacturing.

The website outlines career options with information that includes job descriptions, career path sequences, educational requirements and salary ranges. A special feature is a searchable database organized by state and province of more than 1,600 post-secondary schools offering programs in construction trades and equipment technology. The website also presents information on additional industry scholarship opportunities, apprenticeships and other career-building programs.

A section of the website targets teachers and counselors to help them connect to local companies and other resources they can use to explore industry opportunities with students. The website also helps parents better understand the scope of the construction industry as a rewarding career choice for their children.
