Crane operator registration deadline nears

June 14, 2007 • British Columbia crane operators who are not registered with the BC Association for Crane Safety (BCACS) by July 1, 2007, will face being barred from construction sites, said a spokesman for WorkSafeBC, according to a recent article by the Journal of Commerce.

Employers will request proof of registration or certification for crane operators or they will not be allowed onto the jobsite, according to Don Nelson, workplace coordinator responsible for implementing the safety regulations. Employers found to have unregistered operators on site will be liable for a financial penalty if they fail to take action.

The new regulation states that as of July 1, 2007, most operators of cranes covered by the regulation must have documented proof that they are either certified or registered for assessment that would lead to certification by the BCACS. Existing operators can register with the BCACS with forms made available at www.bcacs.ca.

Currently, about half of approximately 5,000 crane operators in the province have registered with BCACS, according to the Journal of Commerce. Operators who register by the deadline only have to take a practical review to establish certification, while those who are not registered by the deadline will be looked at as new entrants and will have to take a written exam and complete a practical review.

The regulations can be viewed on WorkSafeBC's website, http://www.worksafebc.com.
