Detroit has introduced the DT12-VL, the newest addition to its DT12 Vocational transmission series. The DT12-VL is a purpose-built automated manual transmission for heavy-duty vocational applications, offering weight savings, off-road capabilities and improved low-speed torque.

“The DT12-VL is a testament to our commitment to the vocational customer, and to our ability to adapt and innovate on proven solutions," said Aaron Scates, vice president, vocational and medium duty market development, Daimler Truck North America. "With the DT12-VL, we can offer the benefits of the Vocational DT12 to customers that need to maximize payload.”

The DT12-VL weighs 125 pounds less than the DT12-V and is suited for weight-sensitive jobs such as crane support vehicles, mixers, dumps and bulk haulers. Key features include a torque rating of 1,650 pound-feet, 12 forward speeds, up to four reverse speeds, rear PTO and gross combination weight support up to 80,000 pounds.

Vocational-specific modes enhance performance in demanding conditions. Off-road mode maintains momentum on uneven terrain, rock free mode helps vehicles regain traction when stuck and paver mode allows smooth transitions during material placement operations.

Production begins in December 2025. The DT12-VL joins the DT12-V and DT12-VX, completing Detroit’s vocational transmission lineup for construction, utility, heavy-haul and off-road applications.
