January 10, 2007 • Delmar Systems, Inc., a dockside staging and storage company, recently tripled in size and capacity when it moved to a new location in Port Fouchon, La. The company, which has offices in Broussard, La., and Houston, Texas, also beefed up its lifting capacity by more than 650 tons with the addition of two Manitowoc cranes and several forklifts.

“Having a state-of-the-art facility permits us to meet the needs of our Gulf of Mexico-based customers,” says Brady Como, Delmar's Executive Vice President. “We determined that our storage needs and those of our customers far exceeded previous capacity. We are excited about the possibilities this facility brings in offering additional yard storage, equipment staging areas, and increased heavy lift requirements.”

At the new 11-acre tract of waterfront property, a 4600 Manitowoc RINGER® crane, rated at 650 tons with a 330-foot boom length, is staged along a 600-foot waterfront bulkhead. It is being used primarily in the loading and offloading of anchor handling vessels transporting mooring equipment to and from offshore locations, says Como. “We use the crane for heavy lifts of mooring, wires and associated equipment.”

The machine was purchased in late 2005 “from a party in Memphis, Tenn.,” he says. It was dismantled in Memphis and trucked to H&E Equipment in Belle Chasse, La., for a complete refurbishment, including rebuilding the crane's power plant. The largest lifting capacity crane at Port Fouchon, the 4600 was put into service this past December, and is positioned on a stabilized limestone pad adjacent the waterfront bulkhead.

Delmar also made other equipment purchases in anticipation of the expansion. A 150-ton Manitowoc 4000 crawler crane is being used keyside to move around the yard. Two 52,000-pound Hyster heavy lift forklifts, a Komatsu excavator, and a state-of-the-art dockside chain handling system ensure easy loading and offloading of anchor chain.

The facility contains a 24-hour office and crew facility and is completely fenced and secured in compliance with recent Homeland Security Regulations. “After 20 years in the same location, given increased activity levels with additional semi-trucks entering the Gulf, we felt the need to increase our yard and heavy lift capacity,” says Como.
