July 12, 2017 - Mega Cranes currently has two 275 ton Terex crawlers on site working on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement. The project, which is estimated to be worth $3.5 billion, is replacing the current tunnel which originally opened in 1959, turning it into a 10 lane bridge.
Each crawler is currently equipped with 260,000 pounds of counterweight and 190' of main boom, of their total available 250' of main boom plus 100' of jib, in order to complete the lifts for this job.
The cranes are being used to push the current ground material out of the way using air and vibrations, as they pressurize the space to make room for gravel in order to compact the ground. In total, they need to complete 800 holes as per engineering. This is the first stage of the project, as they make pads for the towers in order to put the power lines in so that they are out of the way of the bridge.
The bridge is scheduled to be completed by 2022, with construction officially beginning in April of this year.
