October 22, 2014 - At the start of something new, it's customary to ask for blessings in Hawaii. This even goes for new equipment. Donning a giant lei for the occasion, a Grove GMK6300L all-terrain crane was blessed by the state, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Navy during its handover to the State of Hawaii Department of Defense. The crane will be stationed Honolulu Harbor and will assist with off-loading cargo during emergencies.
According to local news reports, securing the $3 million, 300-ton-capacity crane was a collaborative effort among the state of Hawaii, industry and port partners, and the U.S. military, and made possible with funding from a port security grant program.
State adjutant general Maj. Gen. Darryl Wong said that the grant was provided because the port has such an importance to the people and the state. "We would starve without these ports," he said. "We couldn’t bring in enough things by air.”
