Industry Mourns the Passing of Bay Crane’s Joseph Bernardo Sr.

March 11, 2016 – Joseph Bernardo Sr., of Bay Crane, died last week at the age of 82. Bernardo, who joined his brother sister in the New York City-based crane business 60 years ago, is survived by his wife, Ashley; four sons, Joseph, Robert, Richard and Kenneth; and six grandchildren.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1933, he was a civil engineering graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. His first job was as an engineer with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. While working for the Corps and managing the three Bay Crane machines his father had managed, he was urged by his insurance broker to either focus on his job at the Corps or join his brother, Sonny, and sister, Madeline, as partners at Bay Crane. He chose Bay Crane. Seven-day work weeks were common for him, and his values and principles and dedication are the backbone of the company that he worked so hard to build for almost 60 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Joseph Bernardo to St. Francis Hospital in Port Washington, N.Y.
