JLG Begins Layoffs in McConnellsburg

August 1, 2008 • According to a report today in the Herald-Mail, McConnellsburg, Pa.-based JLG Industries began layoffs yesterday at its McConnellsburg facility and other sites. A company official said the layoffs will reduce the company's worldwide employment by about 13 percent over the next two months, according to the report.

Kirsten Skyba, vice president for global marketing, did not say how many workers were being laid off in McConnellsburg, but said about 600 of the company's 4,500 employees worldwide would be affected by job cuts between now and the end of September, the Herald-Mail reported.

The cuts will affect both salaried and production workers. In North America, JLG employs more than 3,500 people with facilities in Fulton and Bedford counties in Pennsylvania and Oaks, N.D., and offices in Hagerstown.

The company previously announced it would begin layoffs this month and has taken other measures to deal with decreased worldwide demand for construction equipment, including temporary shutdowns of some production lines.
