Joseph Vergona III of The Vergona Crane Co. Dies

July 11, 2011 — Joseph Vergona III, former owner of four-generation family business The Vergona Crane Co., Englewood, N.J., passed away last week from pancreatic cancer. He was 71.

Out of high school, Vergona began working for his grandfather, who founded the business in 1931. In 1981, he took ownership of the company from the family, and over the next three decades increased the crane fleet from 12 to almost 50. Vergona cranes were utilized on major projects throughout the region, including Shea Stadium, the World Trade Center, the New York Jets practice complex, and the LaGuardia Airport control tower.

His sons took over the business when Vergona was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, but he stayed active in the business.
