LGH Adds Overhaul Balls to Rental Inventory

January 18, 2015 - Lifting Gear Hire (LGH), Bridgeview, Ill., has added overhaul balls to its inventory of lifting, rigging, pulling, and jacking equipment. These heavy steel balls provide ballast on the hook end of a crane hoist rope, and supply the downhaul weight needed to counter bearing friction and winch-to-boom line weight.

Also referred to as headache balls, they can also be used in lieu of a winch, depending on what best suits the application. Spilt overhaul balls are made up of two cast-iron halves, which clamp to the line by means of bolts.

These overhaul balls are manufactured by Crosby in two diameters, 7.12-ins. and 9.19-ins., or in weights of 50 and 100 lbs., respectively. Available for immediate rental from LGH’s warehouses, they’re also offered by Gunnebo Johnson, available in 9.50-ins. and 11.25-ins., or in weights of 89 and 154 lbs.
