February 5, 2013 - Liebherr has developed a fall protection system to protect service technicians and rigging personnel while they are assembling lattice booms.
During development, special attention has been paid to its user-friendly handling. The lanyard connections of the fall-arresting device are hitched to both sides of the catwalk onto runners sliding in rails. The lanyard adapts automatically to the movements and the size of the technician.
For safe working on the catwalk, the Liebherr fall protection system allows technicians to easily change directions and walk on the whole length of the main boom without the need to unhook the system and fix it again, leaving both hands free for work.
The fall protection also has an automatic locking function. In case of a fall, this locking function reacts immediately and prevents impact with the ground.
The fall protection system is optionally available for all crawler cranes of the LR 1160, the LR 1200, the LR 1280 and the LR 1300 series built in the Liebherr production plant in Nenzing, Austria. Delivered units of older generations also can be retrofitted with the new safety device. Liebherr complies with OSHA regulations concerning fall protection to help reducing the number of injuries and fatalities in the construction industry caused by falls while working at heights.
The Liebherr fall protection is embedded in an entire concept aiming to make working at heights more secure. Further features of this concept are the foldable catwalk gratings at the end of the boom sections, thus significantly faciliating assembly works, and the possibility to quickly and easily mount various boom components, e.g. the rope guide or the midpoint suspension. The sheave of the rope guide can be fixed at any position without constituting an obstacle for service personnel to walk by.
