October 7, 2010 — JE Dunn Construction Co., Kansas City, Mo., is managing the Kansas Statehouse Exterior Masonry Restoration project, in Topeka, capital city of the state. JE Dunn is using a 21 LC 400 tower crane from Linden Comansa on the project. The tower crane has been erected with a height under hook of 103.8 meters (340 feet), and a jib length of 80 meters (262 feet). This configureation not only allows the operators to reach every spot of the jobsite but ensures they are able to move the jib over the statue that tops the dome at a height of 93 meters (304 feet).
The tower was designed to include nine 4-meter (13-foot) wide sections, one transition section, and another nine 2.5-meter (8-foot) wide sections. Blake Graham, project manager with JE Dunn, notes it is currently the tallest freestanding tower crane in North America. This flat-top tower crane, with 18 tonnes (39,683 pounds) of maximum load, is being used to transport materials required for the restoration around the perimeter of the dome. The exterior masonry project includes stone stabilization, crack repair, and dutchman repairs.
The 21 LC 400 tower crane, which will work for about a year on this project, has been part of JE Dunn’s fleet since 2006, and was sold by Linden Comansa America, a subsidiary of Spanish manufacturer Linden Comansa.
