The Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AZAGC), working with staff at the Maricopa Association of Governments, helped organize the groundbreaking ceremony for the Loop 303 and Interstate 17 interchange, marking the first construction project funded under Proposition 479.
Held March 6 west of Interstate 17 at the Loop 303 intersection, the event brought together state leaders, regional policymakers, contractors, engineers and industry partners to mark the start of the project.
Attendees gathered at the nearby Ben Avery Shooting Facility before shuttle buses transported guests to the project site between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Loop 303.
Speakers included Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Alexis Hermosillo, chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments and Jerry Weiers, chair of the MAG Transportation Policy Committee.
The groundbreaking marked the official start of projects funded through Proposition 479, Maricopa County’s long-term transportation investment plan. The initiative builds on earlier voter-approved transportation funding through Propositions 300 and 400.
Guests walked through a timeline highlighting major transportation projects completed under those earlier initiatives before the unveiling of the official Proposition 479 road sign, which will be installed at project sites funded under the program.
“Projects like the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange represent exactly what our industry does best — building the infrastructure that keeps Arizona moving forward,” said David Martin, president of the Arizona Chapter AGC. “Proposition 479 ensures that contractors, engineers and skilled workers across our state will continue delivering the roads, bridges and transportation systems that support economic growth and quality of life for our communities. The Arizona Chapter AGC is proud to help bring industry and public leaders together to celebrate the start of this important investment in our region.”
The interchange project is expected to improve freight movement, enhance regional connectivity and support continued growth in the northwest Valley.
Construction is now underway as part of the next phase of infrastructure projects funded through Proposition 479.
