Manitowoc Cuts Jobs in Shady Grove
December 18, 2008 — Manitowoc is reportedly cutting 130 jobs at its Shade Grove, Pa., facility in 2009. While demand for cranes continues to be strong, Larry Weyers, executive vice president of the Americas, told the Herald-Mail consumer inability to obtain financing due to the credit crunch and the bailout of the credit industry is driving the purchasing delays or canceled orders.
According to the Herald-Mail, the crane manufacturer has primarily seen softening in the market for its smaller cranes while demand and financing for larger cranes continues to be strong. The mix of large and small cranes produced at the Shady Grove plant has saved many jobs at the plant, Weyers said.
"We are doing everything we can," Weyers told the Herald-Mail. "We plan to move some employees to other projects rather than reduce our work force by even more, as other area manufacturers have done."
A representative at Manitowoc confirmed with Lift and Access the accuracy of the Herald-Mail article and said he did not know of any other Manitowoc facilities affected by the job cuts.
