New Test Facility Planned for Perkins Engines
July 9, 2008 • Perkins Engines Co. Ltd. announces it is investing $37 million (£19 million) in building a state-of-the-art test facility at its headquarters in Peterborough, England.
The Global Engine Development center currently has 50 test cells and seven additional specialist cells used in a variety of complex validation tests, including performance and emissions, mechanical development, endurance, and transient development.
The announcement follows Perkins' recent investment in a world-class crankshaft machining center in Peterborough. With the additional equipment, the facility will allow Perkins to put its Tier 4 engines through stringent validation tests.
“We want to create a highly flexible testing center able to support our long-term needs,” said Robin Woodward, general manager of the GED center. “The 12 new cells will have a significant additional capability and will enable us to run high-value tests at high levels of efficiency.” By investing in the facility, rather than outsourcing large parts of its test program, Perkins will have greater control over timing and thereby will be able to serve its customer base more effectively.
