Ontario Crane Operators Begin Tentative Return to Work

May 30, 2007 -- Crane operators, among the approximately 2000 equipment operators who paralyzed construction projects across Ontario, Canada, over the past week, have begun a return to work. The International Union of Operating Engineers reported it has reached a settlement ratified by employers, and a union ratification vote will be held in the next couple of days.

Although no details of the settlement were offered, according to news reports, Local 793 business manager Mike Gallagher said the workers will start returning to work sites. The stoppage, first reported here last week, began over pay and working conditions, halting work at the London, Ontario's largest construction site, the Toyota Woodstock auto assembly plant. Strikers demanded higher pay and resisted workday changes proposed by employers.
