OSHA Names Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor
Working with the assistant secretary of labor for OSHA and the senior leadership of the Department of Labor, Stohler developed and implemented the policy goals and objectives of the Administration. He also oversaw the regulatory, compliance assistance, OSHA state plan oversight, emergency response, training, administrative, and IT functions at the agency. OSHA has approximately 2,115 employees and a budget of $486 million in fiscal year 2008.
In a statement on the OSHA website, Stohler said that although significant improvement in saving lives and protecting employees' safety and health is a considerable achievement, greater progress is still needed. “Even one fatality on the job is one too many, and every workplace injury and illness places a heavy burden on our nation,†he said.
Prior to working for OSHA, Stohler was a senior legislative officer for the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Labor. In this capacity, he served as the principle House and Senate liaison for OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). He has also worked in the student lending industry, and spent 10 years working for high tech and construction trade associations. Stohler has also worked for several members of Congress, including Rep. John Boehner where he served as the legislative director.
