Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) has ordered 20 hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers as part of an effort to improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions at its New Jersey facility. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

PNCT is one of the largest container terminals on the U.S. East Coast and operates a fleet composed entirely of Konecranes Noell straddle carriers. The terminal has placed more than 200 straddle carrier orders with Konecranes to date. The latest purchase follows the introduction of hybrid straddle carriers at PNCT in July 2022 and a subsequent order of 15 hybrid units placed in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The 20 new machines will be equipped with Konecranes hybrid-drive technology, which combines a diesel genset with a rechargeable battery. According to the manufacturer, the configuration is designed to reduce diesel consumption and emissions while maintaining operational performance. PNCT plans to use the straddle carriers for ship-to-shore container handling, stacking operations and truck and rail loading and unloading.

“PNCT has been operating Konecranes Noell straddle carriers for decades and we are convinced by their performance and reliability. We’ve already seen the benefits of the company’s hybrid drives, and this new investment is aimed at further reducing fuel consumption and operating with even higher efficiency overall,” says Charlie Ferlisi, director of engineering & equipment services at PNCT.

Konecranes maintains a service location near Port Newark that includes a spare parts warehouse to support PNCT’s operations. In addition to straddle carriers, PNCT also operates Konecranes rubber-tired gantry cranes and reach stackers.

“This is a significant repeat order from a major US customer that knows our straddle carrier technology inside out. We very much value both PNCT’s trust in our hybrid-drive technology and our long partnership. This order shows how well this equipment performs in demanding terminal environments like here in New Jersey,” says Peter Kania, sales director, port solutions, Konecranes.

The order is part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, which outlines the company’s approach to reducing tailpipe emissions through a range of equipment options, including hybrid and fully electrified solutions.
