Public Comment on Pennsylvinia Crane Licensure Act Closes Soon

July 1, 2010 — Public comment on the proposed Pennsylvania Crane Operator Licensure Act, which mandates which organizations can provide certification to crane operators in Pennsylvania, closes next week. There are differing opinions as to the act’s wording, which, as it stands now, only recognizes certification providers that are third-party accredited by both ANSI and NCCA.

While CIC supports the efforts of the State of Pennsylvania to promote a safe working environment, this proposed law is fundamentally flawed,” said Debbie Dickinson, executive director of Crane Institute Certification. Currently there are several providers of nationally accredited crane operator certification, including CIC, National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), and the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Only NCCCO is accredited by two third-party agencies; the others are accredited by at least one.

According to Pennsylvania’s Independent Regulatory Review Commission, close of public comment on the act is Tuesday, July 6th.
