Quality Mat Assists Big Lift
May 25, 2011 — One of the world’s leading providers of hardwood mats is doing its part to support the world’s biggest crane. Quality Mat Co., Beaumont, Texas, was chosen to supply construction mats for ALE’s 5,300-ton crane working on Valero’s Port Arthur, Texas, refinery overhaul, a six-month project that will require approximately 6,000 of the company’s 12-inch crane mats up to 32 feet long. The project, which began in January, will be completed in July and is requiring the services of the world’s largest crane, which was shipped to Port Arthur from Taiwan. “We are pleased to be selected by Valero for this very important project,” said Joe Penland, Sr. founder and owner of Quality Mat. “I am proud that we have not only met all of our deadlines, we have exceeded Valero’s expectations.” Quality Mat is a producer of hardwood mats that serve as ground stabilization for heavy equipment, such as cranes. The company provides mats of various designs and sizes to such industries as oil and gas, pipeline, utilities, disaster relief, construction, and environmental clean up.

The company donates 100 percent of its net profits from its recently opened Houston location, the latest in a long line of philanthropic acts by the company and Penland. It supports many local causes, including donating the location for Beaumont’s Girls’ Haven and sponsoring a reading and fire prevention program for Hardin and Jefferson county schoolchildren, including the city of Beaumont.
In addition, donations from Quality Mat provide hundreds of free mammograms and prostate exams through the Julie Rogers’ “Gift of Life” program. The 100 Clubs of Hardin County, Jefferson County, Orange County, and the city of Houston, Beaumont’s Boys’ Haven, and Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans, La., are a few of the other charities that Quality Mat Company supports.
Headquartered in Beaumont, where all of its products—interlocking, crane/dragline, three-ply, wooden composite, and custom—are hand-manufactured, Quality Mat principals see the new Houston office as a more convenient location for customers, including refineries like Valero, located in Texas’ largest city. The company employs more than 100 people at its headquarters and six at its Houston location.
