May 9, 2008 • The SC&R Foundation, Fairfax, Va., recently awarded $27,000 in scholarships for 2008-2009 to nine students preparing for careers related to transportation or construction management. Additionally, the foundation awarded $3,000 in grants for the pursuit of technical degrees or certificates. All of the winners were recognized during the recent SC&RA Annual Conference. Three of the recipients, Matthew Blaine Crawford, Dawn Hemsey and Marie Hansen Neff were in attendance to receive personal recognition. Since 1986, the SC&R Foundation has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships.
$3,000 scholarship winners
William Besser is preparing for his junior year, double majoring in mechanical engineering and business administration at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn. His mother, Mary Besser, is the administration manager at Anderson Trucking Service, Inc., St. Cloud, Minn.
Matthew Crawford will be a senior, double majoring in business and mass communications at Houston Baptist University, Houston, Texas. His father, Darwyn Crawford, is a sales representative at American Mat & Timber Company, Houston, Texas.
Michael Eff will be a sophomore, majoring in welding engineering at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. His father, Gary Eff, is a quality control specialist at GEM Industrial, Inc., Toledo, Ohio.
Victor Evangelist is a senior, majoring in supply chain and information systems, who plans to graduate from Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa., in December. He was an intern from July to December 2007 at Allyn International Services Inc., Fort Myers, Fla.
Dawn Hemsey will be a senior, majoring in accounting at Devry University, Fort Washington, Pa. She is a senior credit/collections analyst at AmQuip Crane Rental, Philadelphia, Pa.
Justin Glines will be a senior, majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky. He is an intern engineer at Link-Belt Construction Equipment Company, Lexington, Ky.
Marie Hansen Neff will be a senior majoring in accounting at Brigham Young University, Orem, Utah. She is an office manager at Mountain Crane Service, Riverton, Utah.
Daniel Ricks is a senior, majoring in construction engineering technology, who plans to graduate from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Calif., in December. He is an assistant project manager with United Riggers & Erectors Inc., Walnut, Calif.
Michael Walsh will be a senior majoring in civil engineering at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill. His father, Kevin Walsh Jr., is vice president of Sankyu USA Inc., Wood Dale, Ill.
$1,000 grant recipients for vocational/technical school education
Paul Szafranski Jr. has been accepted at Universal Technical Institute, Glendale Heights, Ill., where he plans to study diesel mechanics. His mother, Karen Szafranski, is an accounting assistant at Gatwood Crane Service, Arlington Heights, Ill.
Joel Turner Jr. plans to earn a degree in construction management from Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, Ala., in August 2009. He is an assistant estimator at Irondale Industrial Contractors, Birmingham, Ala.
Andrea Williams plans to complete her degree in General Studies at Valencia Community College, Orlando, Fla., in December 2009. She is a sales representative at the Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau, Orlando. Fla.
