SC&RA Presents Achievement Award, Elects Officers

April 29, 2008 • Donald Russell, chairman of Sheedy Drayage Co., San Francisco, Calif., received the Golden Achievement Award during closing night ceremonies at the recent Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association Annual Conference. This award pays tribute to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the specialized carriers and rigging industry. Because of the significance of the award, the association does not issue it every year. It was last presented in 2006.

"Our Golden Achievement Award winner is viewed by his peers as personable, effective and easy going • even though his expectations within his own company and the association have always been very high," said John Ward, SC&RA chairman. "Don Russell is a quality manager, skilled marketer, precise planner and a tight controller when it comes time to execute."

Russell has more than 30 years of experience in the crane and rigging and specialized transportation industry. At Sheedy, he was responsible for the day-to-day management of the corporation with particular emphasis on the marketing, operations planning and execution of the heavy lift rigging and heavy transportation projects, both domestically and overseas.

Previously, he managed large transportation and rigging projects at refineries in Newfoundland, Canada; Cherry Point, Wash.; and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He also participated in the engineering of heavy lift equipment and the planning and execution of the transportation and installation of nuclear power plant components. Additionally, he has extensive experience on projection involving the erection, maintenance and repair and relocation of container cranes and container handling equipment.

Before joining Sheedy, he worked for Rigging International, Bigge Crane & Rigging, and Shell Oil Co. In the U.S. Army, he served as a captain in the Corps of Engineers as an aviator. Russell has made numerous contributions of his time and talent to SC&RA. A member of the board of directors since 1995, he served as president in 2000 and chairman in 2001. He chaired the Crane & Rigging Group in 1995. He also has served on the executive Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Association Nominating Committee, Transition Committee, Crane & Rigging Group Nominating Committee and International Standards Task Force.

Also at the conference, the SC&RA elected its slate of officers for 2008-2009. The association elected Randall Goddard, Atlas Industrial Contractors, Ltd., Columbus, Ohio, as president. Joining Goddard as officers for the 2008-2009 term are:

  • Chairman: John Ward, All States Freight Systems, Twinsburg, Ohio
  • Vice President: Paul LeFebvre, LeFebvre & Sons, Inc., Elk River, Minn.
  • Treasurer: Bill Keen, Keen Transport, New Kingstown, Pa.
