September 29, 2008 • Industry veteran Cloyd Selby of Homer Glen, Ill., passed away on Sept. 24 at the age of 72. Among other achievements, Selby was the first Grove aerial work platform dealer in the Chicago area.

Selby's Aero Squad got its start in June 1988 in Monee, Ill. The company rented and sold the complete line of Grove Manlift equipment, as well as Komatsu forklifts and Thomas skid-steer loaders. In 1993, Selby said the Grove line represented about 85 percent of the company's business, and Selby's Aero Squad tended to concentrate on the upper end of the line where there was less competition. The company was sold to Hertz Equipment Rental in 1996.

In addition to aerial lift rental, Selby had other ties to the lifting industry. He invented the Selby's Arm lifting beam, co-owned Imperial Crane Service with John Bohne from 1971 to 1986, and was a member of Local #150 Operating Engineers.

Services were held for Selby on Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene in Lemont, Ill. Sign his guestbook here.
