October 1, 2014 - Southern Crane recently took delivery of a Tadano ATF 90G-4 all-terrain crane. The new crane was purchased for work on cellular towers, modular homes, HVAC projects, and other taxi rental jobs in the Carolinas.
According to Earl John III, president of Southern Crane, the crane was used to unload a 48,000-lb. communication building. After it was transported to the cell site, the crane was brought in to set the structure. While the project was not complex, it required the use of the full 49,163-lb. counterweight. "This crane [was selected because it] only requires three separate picks off our trailer to install maximum counterweights," Johnson said. "Other cranes in its class require five picks off the trailer for maximum counterweight."
When selecting the ATF 90G-4 for purchase, Johnson said that 168-ft. main boom and 59-ft. jib length combination was attractive for his business, as it allows for quick setup and tear down, even in conditions where there is not a lot of room.
Now that the ATF90G-4 is in use, the Southern Crane team also appreciates the all terrain’s eight wheel drive, crab steer, and the boom down control, which decreases the speed gradually when it gets close to maximum capacity. Johnson reported that the ATF90G-4 will be used for work on cellular towers, modular homes, HVAC, and other daily taxi rental opportunities.
On the experience of operating the crane so far, Johnson said: “We really like the interior tilt controls and seat which give the operator very good visibility. This is the first TADANO we have ever purchased, and our team is very impressed with the features this crane has to offer.”
