Speakers Discuss Industry Issues at AWRF Meeting

April 17, 2008 • The Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) held its Annual Meeting this week, April 13-16, at The Fairmont San Francisco hotel. Two business sessions were held Monday and Tuesday, with speakers covering topics such as labor legislation affecting the industry and litigation issues for businesses in the industry.

Marc Freedman, director of labor law policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce discussed current legislation, such as the Employee Free Choice Act and the Healthy Families Act, and how they would affect small businesses. Todd Peterson, an attorney in San Francisco who specializes on the scaffold, aerial platform, crane and construction equipment industries, gave two presentations over the two days, covering basic information on lawsuits and products liability laws. Peter Cooke with Columbux McKinnon, and Tom Trost with Coffiing Hoists, gave a presentation on chain falls and lever hoists.

 

In association news, it was announced that Theresa McGee resigned as treasurer and has been replaced by Bruce Yoder of American Rigging, who was formerly secretary. Jeff Bishop, Bishop Lifting Products, was elected to secretary for the remainder of the year. The association plans to elect another board member before the summer.

 

Meeting attendees also had the opportunity for sightseeing in San Francisco. An organized tour of major city landmarks was offered. Attendees also participated in a fun run/walk as well as a day of golf at a local course.
