Terex Demag cranes provide lifting power for a tunnel project in Turkey.
April 17, 2007 • Using three Terex® Demag all-terrain cranes, crane operations and logistics service provider CKV-Heavy Lifting & Assembly Ltd. of Ankara, Turkey, provided lifting support for an elaborate tunnel project in Istanbul, Turkey, that will connect Asia and Europe at the Bosporus (Istanbul Strait). The project consists of constructing a double-tube train tunnel and modernizing almost 40 miles of existing railroad tracks. The earthquake-proof tunnel, which is almost 1-mile long, will traverse the strait about 183 feet below sea level.

CKV-Heavy Lifting & Assembly was tasked with assembling a 1,000-ton tunnel boring machine, and a Terex Demag AC 700, Terex Demag AC 650, and Terex Demag AC 350 were brought on location to help with the installation. Because of its dimensions and weight, the tunnel-boring machine needed to be assembled directly at the entry point of the tunnel, and the AC 350 and AC 650 were lowered almost 50 feet into the construction pit for the installation work. The AC 650 lowered the AC 350 first for the pre-assembly of the smaller components. Then the AC 700 lowered the AC 650 to carry out the final assembly at the entry point.

Crane configuration and load

While smaller cranes are frequently lifted, it is rare for a crane as big as the 120-ton Terex Demag AC 650 to be moved by a larger crane. Prior to the lift, the AC 700 crane stood parallel to the excavation trench while the AC 650 was driven behind it in reverse. The AC 700's star-type outriggers in front and back were turned and fixed in a working position. After hooking up the crane, the AC 700 swung the AC 650 over the trench wall and, reaching out 46 feet, lowered it into the bottom of the construction trench.
