Terex Product Safety Officer Awarded ASME Medal

October 2, 2007 • Norman Hargreaves, product safety officer for Terex Corporation, Westport, Conn., has been awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Safety Codes and Standards medal for “outstanding contributions to the advancement of safety and standardization in the field of mobile cranes.”

Hargreaves has been involved in the design of cranes, excavators and other construction equipment for almost 40 years. His work has contributed to standards that have improved equipment design and workplace safety.

“We are extremely pleased for Norman Hargreaves that he has received this significant recognition from his peers in the engineering community,” said Thomas Riordan, Terex president and chief operating officer. “He has devoted more than 20 years of work to the development of ASME safety standards for mobile cranes. No one is more devoted to the advancement of product safety in our industry. We are proud to have him on the Terex team.”

Hargreaves began his career in England in 1954 with the predecessor company to Hawker Siddeley Aviation. A decade later, he joined Preistman Brothers as an excavator engineer. He came to the United States to work for the Bendix Corporation in 1967 and then joined the Lorain Division of Koehring, a manufacturer of cranes and excavators, as a senior engineer. After a brief period as chief engineer for Ruston Bucyrus working on excavator design in England, he returned to Koehring's Lorain division in 1975 and became chief engineer in 1977 and director of engineering a year later. Hargreaves assumed the post of reliability and safety manager for Koehring Cranes and Excavators in 1983. That business was acquired by Terex in 1987. He was subsequently named director of product safety, a position he retained until this year when he was named product safety officer.

As a senior member of the Terex product safety team, Hargreaves reviews product design from a safety standpoint. He is active in standards work domestically and internationally. He represents the United States on the International Standard Organization's technical committee for lifting equipment. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and an honorary member of the Michigan Operating Engineers for his commitment to construction workers' safety.

Hargreaves holds a higher national certificate in mechanical engineering from Hull College of Technology, England, and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio.
