Cincinnati Council Passes Stricter Crane Operations Regulations
April 27, 2016 – Attributing the move to two local crane accidents, the Cincinnati city council has unanimously passed tightened crane operator regulations. Under the new rules, operators must be certified and those who work around crane operations must undergo safety training.
According to news reports, a crane age requirement was removed from the regulation. The proposed wording, that cranes must be less than 20 years old, was taken out of the rule after construction lobbyists argued that number was arbitrary, and the issue was operation and maintenance, not the age of the equipment.
In September 2015, a crane collapsed onto the roof of a Cincinnati area home, causing thousands of dollars in damages, In February, a crane tipped over at a commercial construction site. No injuries were reported in either case, but a deadly crane accident in New York City in February was cited in the proposed Cincinnati regulation.
